Many people imagine that hiring a designer means stepping aside while someone else decides what their home should be. What actually happens is the opposite: working together, you become more connected to your home because every choice begins with who you are and how you want to live. That surprises almost everyone I meet for the first time.
I spent more than a decade with established design firms before opening Harmony Interiors in 2005, and in all those years I've heard nearly every worry a new client can have. Most of them come from not knowing what the process looks like. So I'd like to walk you through it gently and honestly, the way I would if we were sitting together over coffee.
It Begins With Listening
People often expect me to arrive with a look already in mind. I usually arrive with a notebook and a lot of questions. I want to know who uses the home and when, where you like to sit in the morning, and how you want to feel when you walk in after a day on the mountain.
As a certified Feng Shui designer, I believe the design of a space can truly change how you live in it. Color, personality, furniture placement, and scale all work together to create harmony and a natural flow of energy. Your answers guide those choices, which is why two clients with nearly identical condos can end up with homes that feel entirely their own.
You'll Make Every Decision, With Clarity
I often meet people who have spent months trying to choose a sofa. They've saved dozens of links and ordered swatches, and they still can't picture whether any of it will suit the room or sit comfortably beside the stone fireplace they already love. By the time they call me, their home has started to feel like a second job.
My role is to bring calm to that process. I study how you use the room, measure carefully, and return with a thoughtful handful of choices I know will work, so every option in front of you is a good one. Deborah came to me stuck on lighting, and she later wrote that my detailed questions "helped to sort out the numerous choices so I could focus on what worked for me." Watching a client go from second-guessing to enjoying the choices is one of my favorite parts of this work.
Seeing Your Home Before It Exists
One worry I hear often is the fear of spending money on something that won't turn out the way it looked in your mind. That's a very fair concern, and it's why my process offers so many chances to see before you commit. You'll begin with a customized design concept, complete with mood boards and a color story. For larger projects, floor plans, lighting plans, elevations, and 3-D renderings follow, so you can walk through the finished room in your imagination before anything is ordered.
By the time orders are placed, very few surprises remain. Changes still happen, and they're welcome, but they happen on paper where they cost almost nothing. I would much rather adjust a rendering three times than have you live with a sofa that overwhelms the room.
I Carry the Details So You Don't Have To
The part people tend to underestimate is everything between choosing a piece and actually sitting in it. Orders need to be placed with the right vendors, tracked, received, and inspected, then delivered on a schedule that lines up with painters, electricians, and carpenters. When something arrives damaged or late, someone has to sort it out before it disrupts the rest of the timeline.
I handle that coordination myself, alongside vendors and tradespeople I've worked with for years. Vicki, a product vendor who has partnered with me and my clients for more than a decade, wrote that she has yet to meet an unsatisfied customer. Relationships like hers are why problems on my projects are usually solved with a single phone call.
The Reveal
The final step is the one I look forward to most. Once everything is installed, I style and accessorize your home for the reveal, so the first time you see it, it feels complete and unmistakably yours. There's no weekend spent hanging art or searching for the right throw pillows.
I believe your home should be a reflection of who you are and how you choose to live. When a design comes together with that intention, the space feels grounding from the moment you walk in, and many clients tell me the process itself turned out to be a joy.
What New Clients Often Wonder
How involved will I be in the design process?
As involved as you'd like to be. You'll review and approve every concept and selection, while I take care of the research, ordering, and coordination behind the scenes.
How do I know if I'm ready to work with a designer?
If you have a space that doesn't feel like you and you're not sure where to begin, that's usually the right time to call. The earlier we talk, the more options we have together.
If you've been curious about working with a designer but weren't sure what it would involve, I'm happy to walk you through it. A first conversation is simply a chance to talk about your home and how you'd like it to feel. Book a Discovery Call and bring every question you have.
Warmly,
Lynn
